PBH's Free Fringe Back For A 16th Year At The 2011 Edinburgh Festival Fringe

PRLog (Press Release)– Jul 18, 2011– PBH's pioneering Free Fringe returns to Edinburgh from the 6th to 27th August 2011 for its 16th year and biggest yet, bringing an eclectic and diverse programme of 4951 performances of 325 shows across 37 stages, an increase of more than 40% on 2010.

In 2011 the Free Fringe, again, welcomes an array of original comedy, cabaret, improv, theatre, spoken word, and music. Each show is delivered within the Free Fringe's core ethic of showcasing performer-led, audience focussed shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and maintaining its healthy commitment to its host venues.

As well as building hugely on the number of shows and genres in its programme, PBH's Free Fringe welcomes a number of new venues on board for 2011 taking its number of stages from 22 in 2011 to 37. New in 2011 are two spaces at the Princes Mall shopping precinct, The Southsider bar on North Bridge, Ciao Roma on South Bridge, Ryan's Cellar Bar at the West End, Buffs Club on West Register Street, Medina, by Bristo Square, The Street on Picardy Place, Dropkick Murphy's on Merchant Street, Rush bar on the Cowgate, The Rabbie Burns and The Royal Oak off South Bridge and the brand new 'Space 3' at the Voodoo Rooms, West Register Street. Additionally also bringing shows to the city's observatory on Calton Hill.

All venues are located within a 10 minute walk of the Fringe Office on the Royal Mile.

This year's stand-up comedy offering brings the exquisite and much-loved comic Norman Lovett into the Free Fringe fold, with his one man show at the Canons' Gait on the Royal Mile. At new venue addition Buff's Club on West Register St. is Robin Ince's Struggle for Existence in which the renowned comedian will discuss, regret, apes and possibly Schrödinger's Cat. Also at the Canon's Gait is Nick Doody with his Work in Progress a canny mix of new material and his club-hardened routines. Free Fringe founder Peter Buckley Hill brings back the show that started it all for its 15th outing at the Fringe, the riotous comedy institution Peter Buckley Hill and some Comedians XV (The Canons' Gait).

Veteran musician John Otway, affectionately known as Rock and Roll's grea aston martin test failure, returns with Otway on Otway at the Voodoo Rooms described as 'a national treasure' by Q Magazine. Also setting sail from the Voodoo Rooms are 2011 musical comedy award winners Jollyboat with their pirate themed comedy song mash-ups.

Improvised comedy returns with force to the Free Fringe with A Good Improv Show (Sin Club) auto part with its revolving cast of renowned impro players, The Improlympians (Rabbie Burns) return with an entirely improvised play created entirely by audience suggestion.

The Cabaret offering at the Free Fringe, builds on the genre's introduction to the programme in 2009, back are Edinburgh-based eclectic cabaret purveyors Itsy with the popular variety showcases Kabarett: Alternative Variety and Midnight Kabarett (both Voodoo Rooms), which include cabaret, comedy a cadillac com">car news nd burlesque performance from a plethora of the Fringe's finest talent. Stage magician-ship is well represented in 2011 with, among others, double act Young and Strange (Southsider) who were recently featured on Penn and Teller: Fool Us on ITV1, Paul Dabek: Truant Trickster (Voodoo Rooms), Wet Paint – A Magic Show (Ryan's Cellar Bar) and Totally Ninja (Belushis). In Theatre Glasgow's surreal satirists The Creative Martyrs present Tales from a Cabaret (Fingers Piano Bar), also among the new dedicated theatre spaces at Princes Mall are original productions Proper Night (Space L8) – a tale of fear and youthful excess and Lovers Walk "Poetry infused with music and dance".

The Free Fringe began in 1995 and was the first of its kind at the Fringe. Run by performers and overseen and managed by founder and award winning comedian Peter Buckley Hill, it seeks to return the Fringe spirit to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe by keeping performances free, not charging performers to hire venue space and building strong relationships with the venues with whom it works.

PBH's Free Fringe is not dependent on corporate sponsorship for 531276856  its survival and  does not charge mandatory fees to performers, nor does it charge venue hire. These factors separate it from all other promoter-led ventures on the Fringe and ensures a fairer deal for audience, performers & venues alike.
