Meeting the Environmental Challenges of Shale Gas Drilling

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 29, 2011– There is now no doubt that the discovery of shale gas in the US has revolutionised the country's energy industry, enabling it to reduce its dependence on foreign imports and secure its domestic supply for the foreseeable future. The Marcellus Shale target is one of the fastest growing shale gas producing regions in the country. In 2007, just under 100 drilling permits were granted in the region. In the first eight months of 2010 this figure increased to 2,108.

Michael Arthur, co-director of Penn State's Marcellus Center and professor of geosciences, said: "We expect that the uptick in Marcellus well drilling activity will continue, given the high production rates being seen in the wells and the relatively low cost to develop this gas resource. "Even with the low natural gas commodity pricing, drilling in the Marcellus can still be profitable for efficient companies," he added.

However, for shale gas to become accepted by members of the public and legislature in states where drilling is taking place, there are environmental questions that need to be answered, particularly in relation to water quality. Hydraulic fracturi dodge ng, also known as fracking, is one of the key techniques which has allowed for the release of the natural gas stored within the shale plays, and as interest in the Marcellus Shale play increases, so will the use of this technique. It involves injecting three million to five million gallons of water, combined with salt and other additives, at high pressures into the rock formation to release the gas. Wells are drilled either vertically or horizontally, and can extend several thousand corsa metres from the wellhead on the surface.

Much of this fluid is acquired from local groundwater supplies and, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, between 15 per cent and 80 per cent of this is the recovered, depending on the site. There are concerns that the process of hydraulic fracturing could have a detrimental effect on drinking water because of the additives it contains and also the natural minerals it could release from surrounding rocks. Water which has been used for fracking, known as flowback, must be treated before it is released back into the environment. However, in order to cut their environmental impact more companies are choosing to reuse this liquid for further hydraulic fracturing. Research conducted by Penn State University found two-thirds of the flowback from the Marcellus region which was returned to the surface within 30 days of drilling was reused by companies, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Tony Gaudlip of Range Resources, explained: "We do not need crystal clear water to use as a base fluid for fracturing. "We do not need to treat the water at all in order to get good production - no distillation, crystallization, reverse osmosis, nanofiltr buick ation, etc. That's all unnecessary to meet new downhole requirements," he added. Another way to reduce the environmental impact of flowback could be portable, on-site treatment systems, like that recently developed by Aquatech International.

Field testing of the system, which is based on technology which has already been used at more than 1,000 sites worldwide, is currently taking place. By treating water at the well site, the number of trucks needed to carry the fluid to treatment plants would be dramatically reduced. Devesh Mittal, Aquatech's vice president, described the technology as a "game changer", telling the Observer Reporter: "It is a huge set-up at the well pad, and logically it is the best place to do the treatment."

Such advancements, however, are unlikely to quiet those who firmly believe the extraction of shale gas will have a detrimental effect on water quality, no matter what steps are taken. Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food &Water Watch, was commenting following the reintroduction of the Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness of Chemicals Act in the House of Representatives and the Senate when she said: "Federal oversight of hydraulic fracturing is almost nonexistent."

"A national, permanent ban on fracking would erase these doubts and protect drinking water from a reckless, poisonous practice. Let's end all hydraulic fracturing in the US," she said. Introduced by Senator Bob Case, the bill calls for greater disclosure of the chemicals used in fracking, which is intended to protect water quality. Although the bill is still in the early stages, it will be up to oil and gas companies to convince the public and the government that they can balance the opportunities of shale gas production with its environmental challenges.

The Shale Gas Drillin bmw g and Completions 2011 event will be hosted from 20th – 21st June in Houston, Texas. For more details, please visit the website: www.shalegassummit.com, call freephone: 0800 652 2363 or email: enquire@iqpc.co.uk.

Commercial and Legal Strategies for Negotiating Long Term Ga

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 11, 2011– As European utilities are forced to sell large amounts of high-priced gas under take or pay clauses into low priced traded markets, losses on contracts can run into hundreds of millions of Euros.  Large industrial purchasers are also missing out on obtaining cheaper supplies of gas as utilities try and pass on the high costs through their own oil-indexed contracts.

These developments are leading to intense pressure to review the terms of long-term oil-indexed take or pay contracts.  With some purchasers achieving success in renegotiating terms with suppliers in recent months, the pressure to switch away from long-term oil-indexed gas contracts is only set to increase in the near future.

C5's ground breaking forum will bring together leading industry figures involved in the negotiation of long term gas supply contracts from across Europe to discuss the critical issues facing gas suppliers and purchasers in Europe today including:

   * Assessing the Future of Long Term Gas Supply Contracts – Are the Pricing Mechanisms in these Contracts Still Appropriate?   * Structuring, Nego aston martin tiating and Drafting Price Revision and Price Re-Opener Clauses&# alfa romeo 13;   * What Gas Disputes Are Arising From Long Term Contracts - What is the Outlook across Europe?    * What Can Be Done at a Commercial Level to Resolve Contractual Disputes?    * Improving Efficiency and Achieving Success at Arbitration    * Global Gas Supply Including new Proje chrysler cts– How will this Affect Pricing and Contract Negotiations?  audi  * How are New Suppliers Accessing the Market Given the Long Term Contract Situation?    * Effective Contract Drafting to Minimize Risk    * How to Value Oil Indexed Contracts in Order to Assess Risk    * The Importance of Governing Law and Jurisdiction Clauses in Gas Contracts

There is no other conference focusing on the fundamental issues which are affecting gas suppliers and purchasers across Europe, this is a must attend event for anyone involved in the renegotiation of long term gas supply contracts.

Maryland Hybrid Service Center now Open at Preston Ford Lincoln

PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 11, 2011– Hybrid vehicle buyers and driver are motivated by many different things to buy a gas-electric car, SUV, or truck. Whether the reason is for the environment, oil dependency, or even the latest trend, you will still need to have the vehicle serviced at a certified hybrid service center. Preston Ford Lincoln now has Master Hybrid Auto Technicians that specialize in hybrid service for all makes and models and is a certified hybrid service center.

With the latest gas price spike not even reaching the peak summer months, many buyers are looking for way to save their gas money and are turning to buying hybrid cars and trucks. Many of whom are looking for a local shop to service and repair their hybrid vehicles. Back in 2006 R.L. Polk did a study and found that 255,000 new hybrids were registered that year. Five years later sales of new hybrids have gone up and the technology in the hybrid has only become more complex. Hybrid owners are finding that they need a certified hybrid technician to be able to service their hybrid vehicles or else they could be looking at very expensive repairs.

Though hybrids have the reputation as being mostly trouble-free, there are many components that are unique to the hybrid needless to say it will get complicated very quickly. Preston Ford Lincoln has invested in all the necessary equipment to provide the correct repair and service to hybrid vehicles of all makes and models not just Ford. "We have been seeing a lot a customers purchasing our hybrid models both new and used so we have to make sure we keep up with all the technologies in the Fords, Toyotas, Hondas, and so forth so we have really tightened up on our expectations from our technicians to be certified in hybrid technology and repair," says Skip McCracken of Preston Ford Lincoln.

Mont. judge orders hysterectomy, patient appeals

District Judge Karen Townsend issued a March 1 ruling ordering the woman to undergo a radical hysterectomy on March 3 to treat her cervical cancer. The woman is identified in documents by the initials L.K.

L.K.'s appeal says she is a deeply religious woman who wants children and that she objected to the hysterectomy on both grounds, the Missoulian reported Sunday.

After L.K.'s cancer diagnosis, Dr. Valerie Knutsen sent a letter to the Missoula County attorney's office in September with concerns about L.K.'s ability to make medical decisions. A nurse sent similar letters in September and October. A petition to appoint a temporary medical guardian was filed in November. On Feb. 11, the temporary medical guardian signed a consent form for L.K. to have the radical hysterectomy. The surgery was scheduled for March 3.

During a status hearing on March 1, a psychiatrist from the Montana State Hospital testified that the woman was having religious delusions that God had cured her and that those delusions prevented her from making fully informed decisions about her medical care.

A state hospital physician testified that the woman's cancer was in stage 1 and that without treatment, there was an 85 percent chance it could kill her within three years. The physician also testified that it was possible, although not probable, for L.K. to have a child at her age. The court record does not include her age.

L.K. testified that she did understand she had been diagnosed with cancer and did understand the risks of dying without treatment.

Her attorney argued that what the state characterized as delusions are actually L.K.'s deeply held religious beliefs.

A day after Townsend made her ruling, L.K.'s public defender filed an emergency petition with the Supreme Court arguing Townsend's ruling violates L.K.'s religious freedom, bodily integrity and constitutional right to dignity. Greg Hood argued his client faced irreversible harm if the surgery went on as scheduled.

"L.K. repeatedly stated that she merely wanted to make the decision for herself and that she may at a later date change her mind and decide to go ahead with the recommended treatment," her appeal stated. "She testified that she wants to have a child and believes God wants her to as well, that she hoped to be able to do so soon, and that her husband was agreeable to being a father."

The Supreme Court stayed Townsend's order and agreed to expedite the appeal.

Magnitude-6.2 earthquake shakes northern Chile

The quake was centered in Putre, about 40 miles (60 kilometers) east of the port of Arica near the border with Peru, and nearly 1,400 miles (2,200 kilometers) north of the capital, Santiago, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake happened about 9:30 a.m. and had a depth of about 70 miles (110 kilometers), the agency said.

Some people ran out of homes and churches into the streets when they felt the shaking, but there were no reports of injuries, Chile's national emergency agency said.

The agency said later that some adobe homes were damaged in the northern villages of Putre and Belen, and there were rock slides on a road that connects Chile to Bolivia.

Several quakes have rattled northern Chile recently, most of them with a magnitude of 5 or less.

Chilean and foreign scientists have warned that the region is long overdue for a significant quake.

The nation is prone to major earthquakes like the magnitude-8.8 temblor that shook central Chile on Feb. 27, 2010, generating a tsunami and killing 524 people.

Gabor has been hospitalized repeatedly since July, when she broke her hip falling from bed.

She appeared in films ranging from "Moulin Rouge" in 1952 to "Queen of Outer Space" in 1958. She also appeared on TV specials, game shows, and guest-starred on various TV series, often playing herself.

End is near for BMW naturally aspirited 4 cylinder

The end of naturally aspirited 4 cylinder BMW engines is near. Citing inside sources from BMW, British magazine Autocar is reporting that all of the Bavarian automaker's future four-cylinder engines will benefit from turbocharging technology, with outputs up to 245 horsepower.

The 2.0 liter aluminum block that made its debut on the X1 xDrive28i will be fitted with different turbocharging systems and engine mapping depending on the output variant. The range-topping 245 PS version gets a twin-scroll turbocharger while lower-powered variants will make do with a conventional turbo. The 245PS version works at pressures of up to 200 bar and benefit from double- VANOS and direct fuel injection. The aluminium block gets a new and very thin cylinder lining of only 0.3 millimeters thanks to the use of sprayed iron technology. That's a massive improvement over the classic 1.5 mm thick cast iron lining and it translates into less weight and better efficiency. The 3.0 liter straight six units will be responsible for higher output levels beyond 245 PS.

It is unsure whether the 1.6 liter turbo that BMW Group uses for the MINI brand will also be employed in BMW models with lower output levels. This engine itself is a multi-times award winning powerplant too. The new set of 2.0 liter turbo variants will debut in the next generation 3 Series expected in 2012.

Jane Russell, star of '40s and '50s films, dies

Such was the stunning beauty of Jane Russell, and the marketing skills of the man who discovered her, the eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes.

Russell, surrounded by family members, died Monday at her home in the central coast city of Santa Maria. Her death from respiratory failure came 70 years after Hughes had put her on the path to stardom with his controversial Western "The Outlaw." She was 89.

Although she had all but abandoned Hollywood after the 1960s for a quieter life, her daughter-in-law Etta Waterfield said Russell remained active until just a few weeks ago when her health began to fail. Until then, she was active with her church, charities that were close to her heart and as a member of a singing group that made occasional appearances around Santa Maria.

"She always said 'I'm going to die in the saddle, I'm not going to sit at home and become an old woman,'" Waterfield told The Associated Press on Monday. "And that's exactly what she did, she died in the saddle."

It was an apt metaphor for a stunningly beautiful woman who first made her mark as the scandalously sexy and provocatively dressed (for the time) pal of Billy the Kid, in a Western that Hughes fought for years with censors to get into wide release.

As the billionaire battled to bring the picture to audiences, his publicity mill promoted Russell relentlessly, grinding out photos of her in low-cut costumes, swimsuits and other outfits that became favorite pinups of World War II GIs.

To contain her ample bust, the designer of the "Spruce Goose" airplane used his engineering skills to make Russell a special push-up bra (one she said she never wore). He also bought the ailing RKO film studio and signed her to a 20-year contract that paid her $1,000 a week.

By the time she made her third film, the rollicking comedy-western "The Paleface," in which she played tough- but-sexy Calamity Jane to Bob Hope's cowardly dentist sidekick, she was a star.

She went on to appear in a series of potboilers for RKO, including "His Kind of Woman" (with Robert Mitchum), "Double Dynamite" (Frank Sinatra, Groucho Marx), "The Las Vegas Story" (Victor Mature) and "Macao" (Mitchum again).

Although her sultry, sensual look and her hourglass figure made her the subject of numerous nightclub jokes, unlike Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayworth and other pinup queens of the era, Russell was untouched by scandal in her personal life.

During her Hollywood career she was married to star UCLA and pro football quarterback Bob Waterfield.

"The Outlaw," although it established her reputation, was beset with trouble from the beginning. It took two years to make, according to its theatrical trailer, and director Howard Hawks, one of Hollywood's most eminent and autocratic filmmakers, became so rankled under producer Hughes' constant suggestions that he walked out.

"Hughes directed the whole picture — for nine bloody months!" Russell said in 1999.

It had scattered brief runs beginning in 1943, earning scathing reviews. The Los Angeles Times called it "one of the weirdest Western pictures that ever unreeled before the public."

Russell's only other notable film was "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," a 1953 musical based on the novel by Anita Loos that cast her opposite Monroe.

She followed that up with the 1954 musical "The French Line," which — like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" — had her cavorting on an ocean liner. The film was shot in 3-D, and the promotional campaign for it proclaimed "J.R. in 3D. Need we say more?"

In 1955, she made the sequel "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" (without Monroe) and starred in the Westerns "The Tall Men," with Clark Gable, and "Foxfire," with Jeff Chandler. But by the 1960s, her film career had faded.

"Why did I quit movies?" she remarked in 1999. "Because I was getting too old! You couldn't go on acting in those years if you were an actress over 30."

She continued to appear in nightclubs, television and musical theater, including a stint on Broadway in Stephen Sondheim's "Company." She formed a singing group with Connie Haines and Beryl Davis, and they recorded gospel songs.

For many years she served as TV spokeswoman for Playtex bras, and in the 1980s she made a few guest appearances in the TV series "The Yellow Rose."

She was born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell on June 21, 1921, in Bemidji, Minn., and the family later moved to Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley. Her mother was a lay preacher, and she encouraged the family to build a chapel in their back yard.

Despite her mother's Christian teachings, young Jane had a wild side. She wrote in her 1985 autobiography, "My Paths and Detours," that during high school she had a back-alley abortion, which may have rendered her unable to bear children.

Her early ambition was to design clothes and houses, but that was postponed until her later years. While working as a receptionist, she was spotted by a movie agent who submitted her photos to Hughes.

The producer was famous for dating his discoveries, as well as numerous other Hollywood actresses, but his contact with Russell remained strictly business. Her engagement and 1943 marriage to Waterfield assured that.

She was the leader of the Hollywood Christian Group, a cluster of film people who gathered for Bible study and good works. After experiencing problems in adopting her three children, she founded World Adoption International Agency, which has helped facilitate adoptions of more than 40,000 children from overseas.

She made hundreds of appearances for WAIF and served on the board for 40 years.

As she related in "My Path and Detours," her life was marked by heartache. Her 24-year marriage to Waterfield ended in bitter divorce in 1968. They had adopted two boys and a girl.

That year she married actor Roger Barrett; three months later he died of a heart attack. In 1978 she married developer John Peoples, and they lived in Sedona, Ariz., and later, Santa Barbara. He died in 1999 of heart failure.

Over the years, Russell was also beset by alcoholism. She was able to rebound from troubles by relying on lessons she learned from her Bible-preaching mother.

"Without faith, I never would have made it," she commented a few months after her third husband's death. "I don't know how people can survive all the disasters in their lives if they don't have any faith, if they don't know the Lord loves them and cares about them and has another plan."

Survivors include her children, Thomas K. Waterfield, Tracy Foundas and Robert "Buck" Waterfield, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A public funeral is scheduled March 12 at 11 a.m. at Pacific Christian Church in Santa Maria.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her name to either the Care Net Pregnancy and Resource Center of Santa Maria or the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Santa Barbara County.

TopSpeed Rendering: 2013 Porsche Cajun

Doesn't it seem as though the veteran sports car manufacturers are hanging up their speedy baseball caps and whipping out some family-oriented fedoras? What's worse is that at the top of the list of manufacturers selling out on the game is our beloved Porsche. Their most recent family-mover catastrophe is the Porsche Panamera, but before that was their first take on the family vehicle: the Porsche Cayenne. Now the Cayenne is getting a little pint-sized brother called the Porsche Cajun, and it seems as if all hell is breaking loose on the go-fast front.

Should we be this upset with Porsche? After all, the Cajun is ready to roll with a 3.0-liter V-6 producing 290 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. There might even be a Cajun Turbo S with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 in the works. This setup is rated at 350 hp. Each model will come with Porsche's typical add-ons such as the Sport Chrono pack with launch control, excellent brakes with optional carbon-ceramic discs, wheels and tires, and a complete exhaust system including a switchable free-flow sport muffler.

Well, maybe we shouldn't be all that upset. After all, people should be able to get their kids to school while also having their fun on the weekends. But if Porsche comes out with a pick-up truck called the Hot Tamale, we're taking our business elsewhere. Until then, we'll try to keep an open mind when it comes to the Cajun.

Check out our rendering of the 2013 Porsche Cajun, and let us know what you think of Porsche's most recent ode to the family in the comments section below!
